0:00:00 Universal logo. Universal logo music in.

0:00:18 Black screen. Music out.

0:00:21 The words "Universal Pictures Presents" appear in gold on the black screen.

0:00:26 "A Kennedy Miller Film" appears on screen. At the same time the camera begins to zoom in on a red book which appears in the background.

0:00:30 The words on the screen fade out as we continue to zoom in on the red book.

0:00:31 "Babe" gradually appears on screen, as if the word is being written by an invisible hand straight onto the screen. In gold, and in large, decorative letters. At the same time, the title music comes in, beginning with a brass fanfare on the notes C, E flat and F.

0:00:37 The front cover of the book opens in one swift movement. A rapid upward arpeggio figure in B flat on the harp accompanies this movement.

0:00:38 Camera begins to pan across what appears to be a living-room or kitchen wall, covered in moving models, figures and pictures of pigs. Theme 1, "If I Had Words", enters in B major, firstly on upper strings, harp and glockenspiel. For the second playing of the theme, xylophone, bassoon, oboe and flute join the other instruments.

0:01:27 Repeated brass stabs and a timpani roll on the dominant (F sharp). The legs of two model pigs that are hanging on the wall move in time to the brass stabs.

0:01:31 Theme 1 is played for a third time, this time on full orchestra, beginning with a cymbal crash.

0:01:52 Zoom in on black and white photo (on wall) of a sleeping piglet's face. Simultaneously the music fades out to harp, strings and glockenspiel.

0:02:03 Photo of pig becomes an image of a real pig on screen.

0:02:04 The flute, harp, strings and glockenspiel take up a new tune, still in B major, but with occasional hints at B minor. A generally lighter, slower and less triumphant-sounding tune than Theme1 ("If I Had Words").

0:02:14 Cut to close-up shots of different parts of various piglets' bodies, all lying on a bed of hay. Gives a "crowded" feel to the scene.

0:02:17 One pig, who we subsequently know as Babe, moves and walks away from the other pigs. Overhead shot.

0:02:21 Overhead pan of the pen containing Babe, his brothers and sisters and his mother, then of two more pens containing similar families of pigs. The music has modulated from B major to B minor, and begins building towards a climax. The full orchestra is now playing.

0:02:24 Narrator in. Begins, "This is a tale about a pig...". Sets the scene for the story to come.

0:02:42 High shot of the inside of the barn we are in which is very large, dark and gloomy. Backlit lorry in distance. Lorry is inside barn and reversing towards the camera.

0:02:43 Closer shot of lorry, still reversing. Music reaches a climax in B minor, with brass stabs on a fairly low B and cymbal crashes.

0:02:49 Close-up of lorry reversing. Lorry stops and two men get out. They walk to Babe's pen, take his mother and return to the lorry. Music becomes increasingly calmer after its climax.

0:03:12 Cut to overhead shot of Babe's pen. An artificial feeding contraption is lowered into the pen from the ceiling and the piglets begin suckling on the teats. At the same time a gentle and simple tune (representing the piglets' innocence as to the disappearance of their mother) begins in A minor, on strings, harp and glockenspiel, with a solo violin playing the tune.

0:03:18 Cut to close up of Babe (shot from Babe's level), looking towards the lorry (out of shot). Looks sad. Says, "Goodbye, Mum".

0:03:22 Narrator in. Explains that the pigs that are being taken away in the lorry believe that they are going to a far-off and better place. Shot of hundreds of adult pigs filing into the back of the lorry. The two men then get into the lorry and drive off.

0:03:36 Outside shot (raining hard, windy and very dark) of lorry driving away. Catch glimpse of the logo on the side of the lorry, which says "Sunny Valley Meats". Music is in B minor and reaches a second climax, with cymbal crashes and brass stabs as the logo on the lorry comes into view.

0:03:38 Narrator out.

0:03:47 Cut to close up of Babe, in the same place as he was previously, looking sad. Music out.

0:04:01 Two men (different to those seen previously) enter Babe's pen. Low shot, possibly from one of the other piglets' point of view. They are talking about choosing a pig to take away, but we are not told what they want the pig for. Babe is chosen by one of the men, who puts him into a brown sack. The men then walk towards the camera carrying the sack. Still a low shot, so only the men's legs and feet are visible. The sound of Babe squealing in the sack is heard. As the men get very close to the camera, the screen goes black.

0:04:11 Cut to close up shot of the faces of two women who are screaming. It is now daytime, and the women are on a funfair ride (visible in the background). Theme 2, "Event", comes in in G major, on woodwind, strings and tambourine with brass in the bass. There is a bass drum pulse on the first beat of every bar (triple time).

0:04:13 Cut to close up of two girls' faces screaming. On the same funfair ride.

0:04:14 Distant, very high (almost overhead) shot of the funfair, showing a big wheel, carousel and games stalls.

0:04:19 Close up of several crowded sheep in a small pen. Shouts and laughter can be heard in the background.

0:04:22 Music is a little quieter and calmer as a conversation between two women (one of whom we subsequently know to be the farmer's wife) begins, about who won what prizes for jam and cakes in a competition at the fair. The women are not visible, the shot is still of the sheep.

0:04:23 Cut to general hustle and bustle around some of the stalls. Low shot. The two women are now visible, and are still talking while walking towards the camera along with the rest of the crowds.

0:04:24 Music is toned down, now on strings and woodwind only. A pastoral melody is played, still in G major and in triple time.

0:04:30 Cut to farmer, walking behind women. Women's conversation continues.

0:04:40 Farmer stops walking. Close up shot of his face, looking at something in the distance. Women are no longer having their conversation, and are now out of shot.

0:04:43 Close up shot of a stall, carrying the sign "Guess The Pig's Weight", with two smiling men standing behind it.

0:04:45 Farmer walks over to the stall and has a conversation with the men, who persuade him to have a go at guessing the pig's weight, and explain that if he wins the game he will win the pig. Music out, and background noise ( shouting, laughter, etc.) of the fair is no longer audible.

0:04:53 Shot from farmer's point of view. Camera looks down into the box which is on the table, and we see Babe in the box looking straight back at us.

0:05:01 Close up shot of farmer's face. Says "That'll do pig".

0:05:24 Cut to farmer holding pig in front of him. Farmer begins to tell the stallholders his guess.

0:05:26 Hear sound of Babe peeing. Farmer immediately stops speaking, and looks down.

0:05:27 Overhead shot, from farmer's point of view, of the grass and his own feet, and Babe's wee hitting the ground. Music in. Comical-sounding tune, derived from Theme 2, on clarinet and bassoon. In B flat major and triple ti me. String accompaniment plays "oom-cha-cha" figure.

0:05:28 Cut to humoured and disgusted expressions the farmer's and the stall-holder's faces.

0:05:33 Held high chord on strings and flute, on B flat major, with the bassoon playing a comical meandering bass figure.

0:05:35 The comical-sounding tune starts up again, this time with the tune played by the strings and the "oom-cha-cha" accompaniment on woodwind.

0:05:39 Cut to detailed shot of the book where the guesses are written. Close up of the stallholder writing the farmer's guess down.

0:05:42 Cut to busy funfair atmosphere. Background noises of shouting and laughter come back in. The farmer walks away from the stall and back into the crowds. Starts as a standard shot which becomes higher and higher until it is an overhead shot. Music gets louder and Theme 2 starts up again (seamlessly, as the comical-sounding tune is derived from Theme 2).

0:06:23 Close up of woman's face, grinning. A cat is just visible, sitting on her shoulders. The farmer's wife talks to the cat/herself about how nice it would be to win the pig so they could eat it.

0:06:33 Music out. A telephone starts to ring. The woman shouts to the farmer, "Hoggett, phone!".
