Another method is to open Windows Character Map, to double-click the character you want to insert, then to click on 'Copy', and finally to paste (Cntrl-V) that character into the required place in your email. The Alt-nnnn alternative is quicker, but you'll need to remember the ANSI code numbers of characters you use often.
